Eyebrow Wax Review

Having already tried out an Eyebrow Shape and various other Eye Treatments at LCBT Salon, I decided it was high time I gave an Eyebrow Wax a go! So this month I decided to visit Stephanie a Level 2 Therapist at LCBT Salon who is currently studying eye treatments.

If you read my review of an Eyebrow Shape you may remember that as I am very short sighted and wear glasses I actually find plucking my own eyebrows a little traumatic! It takes such a long time, and never really looks very polished or finished! All that changed with a quick Eyebrow Wax at LCBT Salon though!

Completely FREE Courses!

It has just been announced that for a short time only 16-18 year olds will be able to enrol on FREE City and Guilds Award Courses. These courses range in skills from Threading to Self Tanning and can be completed in up to just 5 days!

The courses are government funded for 16-18 year olds and LCBT have now taken the decision to remove compulsory Kits from these courses too! The materials used on the courses will be provided free of charge by London College of Beauty Therapy, and you can then choose to purchase an additional kit on completion of their course if they wish.

New courses and dates will be added over the next few weeks and as there is no limit to the number of free Award Courses you can enrol on, it is advised to that you get in contact with CA quickly as demand is expected to be high.

City and Guilds Award Courses are great for adding new skills to your CV, making you even more employable once qualified as you will have a greater range of treatments to be able to offer clients.

Over 19 year olds who receive certain benefits are also able to receive free tuition on many City and Guilds Award Courses, although they are entitled to pay for their exam registration fee which is £52 per course. This is still an incredible price as these courses would usually cost between £100-800!

Over 19 year olds students not receiving benefits are also able to attend as many Award Courses as they like in order to gain new qualifications and skills within the industry. However over 19’s (non-concessionary) are not currently eligible to receive government funding for their tuition fees and will therefore have to pay fees for their tuition, and exam registration.

A full list of available dates can be found here and more information about each Award course can be found on Moodle.

You are also able to enrol on many of these short qualifications if you are not a current LCBT student. They are great as a taster of the industry, or just as a bit of fun!

Get toned this January!

After all the festivities, and over indulging of December, this January’s Treatment of the Month can only mean one thing: Faradic Electrical Body Treatment to get you feeling toned again!

Faradic Body is a 45 minute treatment that is designed to help tighten and tone muscles, the perfect helping hand this January!
The treatment works by placing conductive pads on specific muscle groups and then passing an electric current through the pads which then stimulates the muscles making them tense, thus toning specific muscles making them appear firmer.

I was a little wary when I walked into the treatment room and saw the machine I was about to be hooked up to. It looked a little like a medieval instrument of torture! However I was immediately assured by Acsha my therapist that this was actually to do me a lot of good and no harm at all!

Toma Manicure Treatment of the Month

LCBT are excited to announce that from December 2011 we will now be stocking TOMA nail polishes on the LCBT Salon! The TOMA brand is well known in the beauty industry as a long lasting and affordable alternative to other mainstream brands. While LCBT have worked with Toma for some time it was only now that the time felt right to release the brand onto our loyal LCBT Salon Clients.

So to prove to you just how brilliant the Toma range of colours are we thought it was only fitting to review a Toma Manicure as part of December’s Treatment of the Month!

LCBT will be stocking 16 regular, all year round colours which can be bought from LCBT Salon for just £7.25. However each season we will also stock a limited edition range too, so you can always remain on trend.

I got a little excited when I saw the delivery of the Toma nail varnishes and most certainly couldn’t decide between all the lovely colours, so I thought I would try a different polish on each nail to try and give you a true overview of the range.

Here are all the colours I tried as part of my manicure at LCBT Salon

Youth Unemployment

Last week official youth unemployment in the UK reached an all time high of 1.2 million. 16-24 year olds fair the worst in national statistics which show that 2.62million people in total are currently jobless.

While the unemployment crisis is undeniable, there seems to be a glimmer of hope for those looking to begin a career in the beauty industry. There is something about the beauty industry that has survived the economic downturn better than other industries. According to HABIA (the Government appointed Sector Skills Body for the UK’s Hair and Beauty Industry) 31% of hair and beauty industry employees are aged 16-24 compared to just 13.4% of the whole economy.

London College of Beauty Therapy also agree that the beauty industry seems to be bucking the youth unemployment trend. LCBT runs a dedicated free JobShop service for all current and past students. The JobShop places LCBT students in full and part time employment using their ongoing relationships with beauty industry employers. Gill Scott, Business Development Manager at LCBT said: “The Job Shop currently has over 300 vacancies which are available for LCBT students to apply for. In the past three months alone 98 individuals have found employment directly through the JobShop, and in the past 4 years LCBT have consistently had over 90% progression into employment or further education. The JobShop works for both our students and the industry employers, as they know they will be employing some of the best newly qualified therapists in the industry”.

Gulden Osman, Business and Training Advisor at LCBT’s JobShop adds, “Our employers are more than happy to take on newly qualified therapists and are happy to assist in their future training and development. If therapists have a passion for the beauty industry and can demonstrate exemplary customer service skills, they are more likely to find employment.”

Although LCBT may be biased the statistics don’t lie! Beauty Therapy really can be a passport to a lifetime career… and you don’t have to wait for the economy to pick up either! LCBT have fully funded qualifications and short courses starting throughout the year so there really has never been a better time to train in beauty therapy.

To find out more about LCBT’s beauty therapy courses book your place on an Open Day by calling 020 7208 1300 or email info@lcbt.co.uk

Alternatively why not Have a Go at beauty therapy on 20th January at LCBT, to see for yourself what the industry is like!
Have a Go at Beauty Therapy

Yesterday saw the second of our series of Have a Go at Beauty Therapy events at LCBT. On the day that it was announced youth unemployment had reached 1.2million in the UK, LCBT set about organising an incredible set of activities to promote vocational careers in the beauty industry. Organisations, schools and colleges (as well as a few individuals!) from around London were invited to LCBT to Have a Go at some new beauty therapy and retail skills.

Top 3 Reasons to Try Silk Nail Enhancements

November’s Treatment of the Month at LCBT Salon is Silk Nail Enhancements. You can see a full review of the treatment on our blog, but here are LCBT’s top three reasons to try Silk Nail Enhancements!

Unlike other nail enhancements and nail extensions when applied correctly by a professional, Silk Nail Enhancements do not damage the natural nail. The natural nail is lightly buffed before the silk is applied but there is no filing of the nail bed in application or removal of Silk Nail Enhancements. Therefore you can try this form of nail enhancement safe in the knowledge that you will not be damaging your real nails; in fact Silk's can act as a protection for you natural nail.

October External Events Madness!

We have been so busy this October with a whole range of external events. Getting involved with external events is nothing new at LCBT as students have been participating in events large and small for years now. We have covered everything from Ideal Home Show’s Comfort Zone to smaller charity and fundraising events for just a few students to attend.

However the great thing about all the events we attended in October was 1. The sheer scale of the events (all of them were held at Excel Exhibition Centre!) and 2. They all represented different aspects of the industries that LCBT lives in; the Education industry, Hair and Beauty Industry, and consumer, fashion and lifestyle industries.

WorldSkills kicked off our events in October. This was the largest exhibition to ever take place at Excel and was used as a trial for the Olympics! Over four days (4th-7th October) the event saw over 200,000 visitors from across London, the UK and internationally. A massive international skills competition was held to recognise the achievements of young people working in vocational industries… everything from beauty therapy to engineering and floristry was covered!

LCBT partnered with Ellisons on Friday 5th October to facilitate the Beauty Therapy Have a Go area. A full write up of the WorldSkills London 2011 event can be found here.
